The Blum Affair

Case Synopsis
A Bit Too Young
Way back in 1979, Laura was a young 14 year-old girl who was admitted to a local hospital complaining of lower abdominal pain. Dr. Blum (then 50 years old) was one of many doctors that saw her. On around the second day of Laura’s hospitalization, Dr. Blum took her on a special tour of the hospital and then to his office. While in the office, Dr. Blum offered her some sherry.
One thing led to another, and soon she was sitting next to him on the couch. They began kissing, he fondled her, and then they had sex.
A few days later, while Laura was still in the hospital, this happened again.
A Bit Too Far
Soon afterwards, Laura was discharged from the hospital and continued to see Dr. Blum for medical treatment—although these treatment sessions, which lasted over 15 years until 1995, included sex on the couch, exam room, and sometimes in the reception area. When Dr. Blum wasn’t at work, they would meet in various hotel rooms or even at the patient’s home.
By 1996, this all ended. Perhaps it was because he met Hannah. In August of 1996, a 20 year-old woman named Hannah telephoned Dr. Blum complaining of fever, shortness of breath, and coughing with phlegm. Dr. Blum told her to meet him at his office.
At 2 p.m., Hannah arrived, but no one else was there. Dr. Blum took her back to an examination room. He had her take off her shirt and lie down on the exam table. Dr. Blum looked in the patient’s throat and felt her neck glands.
“Your glands are swollen and it looks like you may be coming down with pneumonia. I’m going to give you some penicillin,” said Dr. Blum.
He left the room to draw up some medication, penicillin with some “pain medication.” Soon after the injection, Hannah became groggy and began “falling in and out of sleep.” She wasn’t able to lift her head, move her limbs or talk.
Dr. Blum then began to massage her feet and thighs, removed her underwear, and proceeded to fondle her.
Hannah woke up with a jump when she realized what Dr. Blum was doing. She became afraid and staggered out of the office, where she met some people who were able to help her.
A Bit Much
But wait! There’s more interesting information:
Dr. Blum’s life and medical practice was full of controversy. As an avowed white supremacist, he had previously worked as a special forces physician for the white minority government of Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. Fit and very muscular, he would often say, “I’ve killed people in my lifetime, and I have no qualms about killing again.”
He also worked to amass biological and chemical weapons, storing them in his and a friend’s home. Reportedly, these weapons were sold to a high-ranking South African official.
Case Outcome
Dr. Blum had his license revoked. Laura also sued him for performing unnecessary surgeries on her without her permission, winning a settlement.
Analysis by Florence
It is very difficult for most of us to comprehend what Laura felt that first experience with Dr. Blum. She could have been very impressionable, or was very excited about her first sexual experience. Or, instead, she could have been intimidated into it. Whatever the reason, she decided to continue the relationship, well into her adulthood. For me, it is difficult to believe that she developed into a normal young lady, considering that she was taken advantage of so early in life. What an effect it must have had on her social life!
There must have been a falling out, as she ended up suing him, albeit for something unrelated. Perhaps what happened with Hannah was indeed the catalyst. Whatever the case, I believe what Dr. Blum did to Laura was very damaging to her, especially developmentally and psychologically. Luckily, Hannah was not permanently hurt.
The other facts about Dr. Blum’s life is certainly very interesting. At the same time, I feel that being a white supremacist reflects little about his professional ability as a doctor. It is, however, still extremely disturbing.

Well Flo, I agree with you. It’s hard not to in this case. In my mind, Dr. Blum attempted to rape Hannah by drugging her while pretending to be helping her. Reading about his life and his selling of biological and chemical weapons sounds too much like it was straight out of Hollywood. Big and buff, he was larger than life. I’m not all too surprised that Laura, being just 14, would find this macho doctor uber-attractive. Imagine how many 14 year-olds would die to spend a night with Brad Pitt (or whoever the latest boy craze is today—I’m obviously out of touch lol). Unfortunately that still doesn’t make it right. Above all, doctors should never abuse the power of trust that they hold.

I have to admit that the deal with Laura wasn’t shocking to me until I read that their relationship lasted 15 years! I can understand a young teenager being infatuated with her doctor or someone older, but it is another thing for it to last so long. There must be just so much there that was going on.
I think this case is a very important study. Especially in light of recently discovered events (of a certain pediatrician pedophile), it’s paramount for parents to be fully aware of what doctors are doing with their children. Most doctors are great, but it’s just usually better to err on the side of caution.

Sounds fishy. Who’s really at fault? Inbred parents, hussy 14 yr old or manipulative physician are all to reviewed by my interpetation of the story. Where was the parents or gaurdians of this 14 year old girl that repeatedly seen this doctor unaccompanied for such a long duration.
BTW, what does white supremicey have to do with physician abusing patient respect? Did I miss something? Are the victims non caucasian?

Racists can probably be good doctors but I dont see how they can get away with a minor without parents knowing nothing at all.

What a wacky deal this is. I agree with you guys, how does a 14 year old girl have alone time with a doctor? Not sure about the white supremacy issue being relevant to this case except to show the doctors character.
