Nursing Home Workers Accused of Neglect and Lying
Posted on 01. Apr, 2010 in News Stories
On Wednesday, 14 nurses and aides were arrested and charged with endangering their patients, felony falsification of business records, and various public health misdemeanors. They all worked for Northwoods Rehabilitation and Extended Care Facility in Troy, NY. All 14 are under suspension by the facility.
Hidden cameras were put into patients’ rooms and recorded six week’s worth of footage, allegedly showing neglect in their duties to care for the elderly residents in the facility. This included failing to turn patients, change their clothes, and administer medication. However, records were apparently falsified to reflect that these actions were done. There was even a faked medical exam.
More information is available from Channel 4 WIVB below (current as of last night):

Not enough information once again. What was the staffing ratio? Aides to resident, LPN/RN to resident. I can’t believe that many staff would deliberately and knowingly refuse to care for residents. What does the Administrator and Director of Nursing expect…to falsify records for when State inspections and appeals comes to visit? Maybe educate the caregivers and give them the ability to notify an outside agency when they suspect neglect or unfair care. Maybe the caregivers didn’t realize the care level may change throughout the life span of the resident. Mobile to immobile. Self care with supervision to total care…

I understand that people need to ensure the safety of their vulnerable family members, but I am very cautious about this idea of hidden cameras. This violates patient privacy, it violates HIPPA regulations. Why would the investigators have ever thought it would be acceptable to place hidden cameras in patient care areas?

One thing I have learned in my journey through life is that what is printed in the newspapers and shown on the TV is not necessarily what is accurate – it is what sells, i.e. drama. I have a hard time swallowing the idea that that large a number of nursing staff would be that ambivalent to their patients needs. As in every profession there are slackers, though in nursing the slackers have a pretty big impact, but there is either a major misinterpretation of what occured there or there is a DON that is totally out of touch with the patient care in the facility.

If the allegations against these nurses proves to be true then they should be made to feel like their unfortunate patients did, neglected and cast off like trash.
